On December 2, 2025, Hong Kong Talent Engage (HKTE), in collaboration with Humboldt University of Berlin, hosted the webinar "Why Hong Kong? Unlocking Startup Opportunities." The event showcased Hong Kong's position as one of the most vibrant global centers for innovation, offering unparalleled opportunities for startups, investors, and international talent. Experts explained why Hong Kong is the ideal gateway to China and the world and how its unique ecosystem supports entrepreneurship and career growth.

Hong Kong combines a strong financial sector, world-class universities, and proximity to the Greater Bay Area (GBA)—a region of 87 million people and significant GDP. This strategic location provides startups with access to capital, research, advanced manufacturing, and global markets. The city also offers high living standards, safety, cultural diversity, and a dynamic business environment that balances innovation and regulation, enabling companies to move fast, fail fast, and scale quickly—a mix of Silicon Valley's creativity and Shenzhen's speed.

Through initiatives like the Top Talent Pass Scheme (TTPS), qualified professionals can relocate to Hong Kong without a prior job offer. Humboldt graduates benefit from direct access to job opportunities via HKTE's platform. HKTE supports talent throughout the process—from visa applications to integration—making Hong Kong an attractive destination for skilled professionals in tech, finance, and emerging industries.

The webinar featured insights from three industry leaders. Felix Chan, Director of HKTE, emphasized Hong Kong’s role as a "super connector" between global investors and China's markets, supported by incubators such as Hong Kong Science Park, Cyberport, and the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation Park. Jovan Trajceski, innovation expert and Co-Chair at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, highlighted the city's transformation into a hub for Web3, Deep Tech, and FinTech, with regulatory innovations like stablecoin frameworks and CBDC pilots. Celia Ding, investor and founder of BrightPath, shared practical advice on funding strategies, team building, and leveraging Hong Kong’s international DNA—where 28% of startup founders are non-local. She stressed the importance of networking through chambers, accelerators, and major events like Hong Kong FinTech Week.

Looking ahead, experts predict that biotech, cybersecurity, and quantum computing will be key growth sectors in the next three to five years. These fields address global challenges such as aging populations, healthcare innovation, and secure digital infrastructure. For students and aspiring entrepreneurs, focusing on these areas and building strong networks early can open doors to long-term success.

Hong Kong's startup ecosystem thrives on collaboration, mentorship, and warm introductions. Whether you are a founder, investor, or professional, Hong Kong offers an inclusive environment and a fast-paced market where opportunities favor those who are prepared, adaptable, and ready to immerse themselves in a dynamic landscape.
